THE SHORT ANSWER
What is BaZi?
BaZi (八字), also called the Four Pillars of Destiny, represents a birth moment as four pillars—Year, Month, Day, and Hour. Each pillar contains one Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch, making eight characters in total. The Day Pillar's stem is the Day Master, the reference point used to read the Ten Gods and Five-Element relationships. BaZi is a traditional symbolic framework for reflection; it does not guarantee events or outcomes.
WHAT THE RESULT CONTAINS
See the chart facts before the interpretation
The result separates calculated chart components from traditional interpretation, so you can see what each reflection is based on.
柱
- The Four Pillars (四柱)
- The Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch for the Year, Month, Day, and Hour—the calculated framework of the chart.
日
- Your Day Master (日主)
- The Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar. It is the reference point for the Ten Gods and other element relationships.
神
- The Ten Gods (十神)
- Ten relationship labels derived from how the other stems relate to the Day Master through element and polarity.
行
- Five-Element distribution (五行)
- How Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water appear in the chart and season—a symbolic balance model, not a health measurement.
运
- Decade cycles (大运)
- Traditional ten-year timing markers used to reflect on changing themes, not guaranteed lucky or unlucky events.
HOW THE CALCULATION FLOWS
From birth details to Four Pillars
Enter the birth details
Provide the Gregorian birth date, birth time, and birthplace. The name labels the saved chart; it does not determine the Four Pillars.
Align the birth moment
The existing birthplace data is used for true-solar-time correction. Location matters most when the birth time is close to an Hour-Pillar boundary.
Build the pillars and relationships
The calculator constructs the Year, Month, Day, and Hour Pillars, then labels Ten-God and Five-Element relationships around the Day Master.
Read facts and interpretation separately
Start with the calculated chart facts, then move to traditional meaning, modern explanation, and stated limitations.
TIME, PLACE, AND LIMITS
Why do birthplace and exact birth time matter?
True solar time
Civil clock time comes from a time zone, while local solar position also varies by longitude. This calculator applies its existing birthplace-based true-solar-time correction before casting the chart. The correction matters most near a traditional two-hour boundary, where the Hour Pillar may change; away from a boundary, it may not change the result.
Interpretation limits
- If the birth time is unknown, the Hour Pillar and interpretations that depend on it remain provisional.
- BaZi is a traditional symbolic system, not a scientifically validated forecasting instrument.
- Do not use a BaZi reading as a substitute for medical, legal, financial, employment, or relationship advice.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Before you calculate
Why is BaZi called the Eight Characters?+
Year, Month, Day, and Hour each form one pillar. Every pillar contains one Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch, giving eight characters in total.
What is the Day Master?+
The Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar. BaZi uses it as the reference point for element, polarity, and Ten-God relationships.
Do I need an exact birth time?+
An exact time is preferable because it determines the Hour Pillar. Without it, the other three pillars can still be shown, but Hour-Pillar content must remain marked as uncertain.
Why does a BaZi calculator need birthplace?+
Birthplace is used to align civil clock time with local solar time. This matters most near a traditional two-hour boundary, where the Hour Pillar may change.
Can I enter a lunar-calendar date in this form?+
This form currently accepts Gregorian dates. If your family record uses the lunar calendar, verify and convert it to the corresponding Gregorian date before entering it.
Is BaZi scientifically proven?+
No. BaZi is a traditional symbolic and interpretive system, not a scientifically validated diagnostic or predictive instrument. A careful use is to treat it as a prompt for questions and reflection.
