A 'formation' (格局) is a destiny pattern formed by a specific combination of stars. When certain stars fall on a chart in a particular way, they form a recognised pattern that reveals its core direction — Sha Po Lang for breakthrough, Ji Yue Tong Liang for stability, and so on. Formations are a key to reading a chart's character and potential.

Usually more than one. A single chart often carries several formations at once — some governing wealth, some standing, some a caution. They layer and qualify each other, and only together form the full picture. No single formation should be read as the whole verdict.

Not necessarily. Formations come in auspicious, cautionary, and mixed kinds. The auspicious are tailwinds, the cautionary are warnings, and the mixed depend on how you use them — and whether a formation 'holds' also depends on malefics. A formation names potential and lessons; realising it still rests on your choices and effort.
