The twelve palaces are laid around the chart's twelve earthly branches, starting from the Self palace and running counter-clockwise through Siblings, Spouse, Children, and so on to Parents. The Self palace's position is derived from your birth date and time, and the other eleven follow from it.
The Self palace — it is the centre of the whole chart, fixing your innate character and life's pattern, and the other eleven are judged in relation to it. After it, the Wealth, Career, and Spouse palaces are most often read, the everyday triad of money, work, and love.
It is called an 'empty palace', and it is not a flaw. An empty palace borrows the main star of its opposite — the Self borrows from Travel, the Spouse from Career, and so on. Those who 'borrow a star' adapt powerfully, but must set a direction early; the opposite palace lends the strength to anchor it.
