Beginner's Guide · How to Read a Chart
Read a Zi Wei Dou Shu chart in five layers: locate the Life Palace, add its opposite and trines, separate main stars from modifiers, apply the Four Transformations, then add the ten-year and annual cycles. At each layer, separate calculated placement from interpretation and test the theme against real examples.
A Zi Wei Dou Shu chart can look like a wall of Chinese characters. This five-layer method gives you a repeatable way in: identify the chart fact, frame a bounded interpretation, find evidence and a counterexample, then stop before prediction. The goal is a better question, not a verdict.
ZiWei is a Chinese system, but you can master it in English. Here is the standardized terminology this guide uses — each term as 中文 (Pinyin) = the English meaning.
Step 1 · 命宫 (Mìng Gōng) = the Life Palace
Start with the Life Palace (命宫, Mìng Gōng). Chart fact: note its main star or, when it is empty, the opposite palace used by the borrowing-star rule. Interpretation: this is the first identity lens. Accuracy check: write down one repeated choice that fits and one exception. Limitation: neither a star nor an empty palace defines your whole personality.
Go deeper: the Life Palace →Step 2 · 三方四正 (Sān Fāng Sì Zhèng) = the Three Harmonies and Four Adjacents
The beginner's classic mistake is reading one box alone. Chart fact: 三方四正 (Sān Fāng Sì Zhèng) combines a palace with its opposite and two trine palaces. Interpretation: the four positions add context and competing themes. Accuracy check: look for support across more than one placement and a real example. Limitation: agreement inside the chart is not proof of an outcome.
| Palace in the field | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| the palace itself | The focal palace and its main symbolic theme |
| opposite · 7 boxes away | The opposite palace, adding external context or tension |
| trine · 5 boxes away | A trine palace that can reinforce or qualify the focal theme |
| trine · 9 boxes away | A second trine palace that can reinforce or qualify the focal theme |
Step 3 · 主星 / 辅星 (Zhǔ Xīng / Fǔ Xīng) = main stars vs minor stars
A chart looks crowded, but the method has a hierarchy. Chart fact: the 14 main stars supply the lead archetypes, while support and challenge stars modify them. Interpretation: start broad, then add context. Accuracy check: ask whether the modifier appears in repeated behavior. Limitation: labels such as 'supportive' or 'challenging' do not guarantee help, hardship, rank, or loss.
Go deeper: the 14 Main Stars →Step 4 · 四化 (Sì Huà) = the Four Transformations
Chart fact: the birth-year stem assigns Hua Lu (resources), Hua Quan (agency), Hua Ke (visibility), and Hua Ji (friction) to four stars. Interpretation: these modifiers suggest where a theme may feel easier, louder, or more demanding. Accuracy check: find two repeated examples and one exception. Limitation: they do not forecast money, authority, reputation, or misfortune.
Go deeper: the Four Transformations →Step 5 · 大限 / 流年 (Dà Xiàn / Liú Nián) = the Major Limit & the annual fortune
Chart fact: the Major Limit (大限, Dà Xiàn) selects a ten-year layer, and 流年 (Liú Nián) adds the annual layer. Interpretation: together they emphasize a set of themes for review. Accuracy check: compare the theme with observable circumstances before acting. Limitation: the layers cannot tell you that a specific year is destined for advance, retreat, gain, or loss.

| # | Layer | It answers | Where to look |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 命宫Life Palace (Mìng Gōng) | Which identity theme should I test? | The main star in the box marked 命宫 |
| 2 | 三方四正Three Harmonies & Four Adjacents | How do the world and my supports shape me? | The palace + its opposite + its two trines |
| 3 | 主星 / 辅星main stars vs minor stars | Which archetype leads, and what modifies it? | The 14 main stars first, then the minor stars |
| 4 | 四化Four Transformations (Sì Huà) | Where do resource, agency, visibility, and friction themes fall? | Birth-year stem → Lu / Quan / Ke / Ji |
| 5 | 大限 / 流年Major Limit & annual fortune | Which themes does each calculated cycle emphasize? | The ten-year limit palace + the current-year palace |
Follow five steps: (1) locate the Life Palace; (2) add its opposite and two trine palaces; (3) separate main-star themes from modifiers; (4) apply the birth-year Four Transformations; (5) add the ten-year and annual layers. At every step, separate the calculated placement from interpretation, test the theme against lived evidence, and do not turn it into an event forecast.
The Life Palace is fixed by your lunar birth month and birth hour, landing in one of the twelve palaces. The hand calculation is fiddly; the reliable way is to use a chart calculator — enter your date and time of birth and it marks the 命宫 box for you. Cast a free chart to see yours.
San Fang Si Zheng (三方四正) means reading a palace with its opposite and two trine palaces. That four-position field is the chart fact; the interpretation is a combined theme. Check it against repeated examples and a counterexample. It adds context; it does not provide a verdict or guaranteed outcome.
The 14 main stars supply the lead archetypes; support and challenge stars modify those themes. Read the broad pattern first, then add detail and look for real examples. 'Supportive' and 'challenging' are interpretive labels, not promises of help or harm.
They are a major layer in this tradition. The birth-year stem assigns Hua Lu, Quan, Ke, and Ji as resource, agency, visibility, and friction modifiers. Check each theme against repeated behavior before using it. The labels cannot guarantee money, authority, reputation, support, or loss.
Only provisionally. The birth hour affects the Life Palace and star placements, so an unknown time can produce a different chart. Look for a reliable record or family evidence; if none exists, compare plausible hour scenarios and label the result uncertain. Do not choose noon and present it as your verified chart.
Cast your chart, walk the five layers, and save three prompts: one about relationships, one about resources, and one about work. Compare each with real behavior before you share it; the chart does not identify a destined partner or guaranteed outcome.
