Da Xian (大限) is a ten-year chapter — the Decade Luck; Liu Nian (流年) is a single year — the Annual Luck. The method is to STACK them on your natal chart: the natal chart is the fixed map, the Decade is a 'moving Self palace' that walks one palace every ten years, and the Year is a 'moving Self palace' that walks one palace each year. Read the three layers together — wherever the natal, decade, and annual transformations all land on the same palace, that is where the year's big events fire.
Your natal chart never moves — it is the fixed map of who you are. Luck is read by laying two moving layers on top of it: a ten-year layer and a one-year layer.
The chart fixed at your birth, unchanging for life. Your Self-palace main star is the constant 'you' running through everything.
Every ten years the 'Self palace' moves to the next palace; that palace is this decade's stage, and it carries its own decade transformations.
Each year the 'Self palace' moves again, fixed by that year's branch, carrying the annual transformations and stars that frame the year's practical themes to watch.
The starting age comes from your Five Element Bureau: Water 2 starts at 2, Wood 3 at 3, Metal 4 at 4, Earth 5 at 5, Fire 6 at 6. The first decade-limit begins at the Self palace.
Direction depends on yin/yang and sex: yang-male and yin-female go forward (clockwise); yin-male and yang-female go backward. Each step into the next palace is the next ten years.
The decade's Self palace has a stem of its own, which fires a fresh set of four transformations (大限四化) layered over your natal stars — the theme of these ten years.
The year's earthly branch fixes the annual Self palace: whichever palace that branch occupies on your chart becomes this year's 'Self.' From it, the year's twelve palaces and its annual transformations (流年四化) are laid out.
Worked example — 2026 is a Bing-Wu (丙午) year, branch Wu (午). So the Wu palace on your chart is your 2026 annual Self palace, and the Bing stem fires that year's transformations. Whatever natal stars sit in your Wu palace, that is the room 2026 walks you into.
Natal transformations are the base color, the decade's are this ten years' fuse, the year's are this year's trigger. The skill is watching where they STACK on the same palace.
When natal, decade, and annual Hua Lu land on one palace, opportunity bursts there — the year to advance in that life area.
When three Hua Ji stack on one palace, that is the year's greatest pressure point and lesson — the year to hold the line there, not to force it.

Da Xian is the traditional ten-year cycle: it frames the main theme of that stretch of life. Liu Nian is the annual layer: it narrows the theme to a year of attention. The decade is the direction, the season; the year is the day-to-day weather. Read the decade for context, then the year for practical questions to verify in real life.
The starting age is set by your Five Element Bureau: Water 2 starts at 2, Wood 3 at 3, … Fire 6 at 6. The direction depends on yin/yang and sex: yang-male and yin-female go forward (clockwise through the palaces); yin-male and yang-female go backward. The first decade-limit begins at the Self palace, and every ten years moves to the next palace.
By the year's earthly branch: whichever palace that branch occupies on your chart becomes that year's 'annual Self palace.' For example, 2026 is a Bing-Wu year, branch Wu — so the Wu palace on your chart is the 2026 annual Self palace, and the year's twelve palaces and annual transformations are laid out from it.
Natal transformations are the base color, the decade's are this ten years' fuse, the year's are this year's trigger. Watch for 'stacking': when the natal, decade, and annual Hua Lu land on the same palace, that is where opportunity bursts; when three Hua Ji stack on one palace, that is the year's greatest pressure point and lesson. Stacked Lu — advance; stacked Ji — hold the line.
