三方四正 · Sān Fāng Sì Zhèng
San Fang Si Zheng (三方四正) — the Three Sides and Four Uprights — is the core reading method of Zi Wei Dou Shu: you never read a palace alone. You read four palaces at once — the Native palace (you), its Opposite (the force from the outside world), and its two Trine palaces (your supports). Together they form one energy field, and a star's true meaning is decided by all four, never by one.
Any palace is read together with three others. The Native palace plus its two Trines is the 'San Fang' (three sides); add the Opposite and you have the 'Si Zheng' (four uprights) — one field of four.

Geometry: the Opposite is 6 palaces away; the two Trines are 4 and 8 palaces away — one trine triangle plus one opposition line. This is exactly what the in-app reading computes for every palace.
For the Self palace, the four-palace field is Self + Travel + Wealth + Career — the famous 'Ming-Cai-Guan-Qian' (命财官迁). It is why these four palaces define a person: who you are (Self), the world you meet (Travel), how you earn (Wealth), and what you build (Career), all read as one.
So when someone says 'I'm a Zi Wei (the Emperor) in the Self palace,' a master doesn't stop there — they immediately look across to the Travel palace and down to the Wealth and Career palaces to see what supports or challenges that Emperor. The single star is only the headline; the field is the story.
If the Native star is met by benefics in its field (Zuo Fu / You Bi, Wen Chang / Wen Qu, Lu Cun, Hua Lu / Hua Ke), its energy doubles and it readily 'forms' into something accomplished.
If the field carries Fire, Bell, Ram, or Chained stars, or a Hua Ji striking across, even a fine star is dented — 'made by the field, broken by the field.'
If the Native palace has no main star, you 'borrow' the Opposite's stars — then the Opposite is nearly the Native palace itself, and your keynote is read from across the way.
The final verdict is the NET of all four: more benefic than malefic is good, more malefic than benefic is hard. Any single palace's worth is settled back against its San Fang Si Zheng.
The Native palace (you), the Opposite palace (directly across, the 7th palace, the outside world), and the two Trine palaces (the 5th and 9th palaces either way, your supports). Because no star stands alone. A star in the Native palace is 'struck' by the Opposite and 'met' by the Trines. The very same main star is made by supportive stars in its field and broken by malefics (Fire, Bell, Ram, Chained) striking across. Reading one palace is reading one side; masters have always weighed all four.
The Opposite hits hardest — it strikes the Native palace head-on and is the outer force you meet most across life (environment, rivals, partner). The Trines 'shine over' more gently, like two long-term helpers. When the Native palace is empty, you 'borrow' the Opposite's stars to anchor it — then the Opposite is nearly the Native palace itself.
The Trines come from the four branch-triangles: Shen-Zi-Chen (Water), Yin-Wu-Xu (Fire), Si-You-Chou (Metal), Hai-Mao-Wei (Wood). Whichever group your palace's branch belongs to, the other two branches are its Trine palaces; the Opposite is the direct branch-clash (Zi-Wu, Chou-Wei, Yin-Shen…). So San Fang Si Zheng is really 'one trine triangle plus one opposition line.'
