Bǐ Jiān

'Bǐ' means parallel, alike. The Friend shares the Day Master's element and polarity — a person standing beside you who is exactly like you, which is why it signifies both peers and the self. In a weak chart it is the most precious helper, shouldering the weight of Wealth and Officer for the Day Master; in a strong chart it competes with you for the same resource. Its essence is equality: it will not be ruled, and will not take what is not earned.

Those with a strong Friend have a firm sense of self — opinionated, principled, loyal to their peers, self-made, hardworking, and slow to admit defeat. At their best they are independent and dependable, true to their word with friends; at their worst they are stubborn, slow to compromise, and too fond of going it alone to hear advice. They are built to be their own master, and chafe inside layered hierarchies.

The Friend favors self-driven paths: self-employment, freelancing, equal partnerships, skilled trades, athletics, and any field built on independence and stamina. For a weak Day Master it lends strength, letting you carry wealth and responsibility that would otherwise crush you. But in any partnership, agree the split first — peers fall out over money faster than anyone.

The Friend contends with Wealth (both want to control the same money), so people with many Friends tend to see money shared out — friends borrowing, sibling ventures, partnership splits. For a strong Day Master with thin wealth, more Friends means more leakage; but for a weak Day Master buried in wealth, Friends are needed to 'help you hold it.' It hinges on the strength of the Day Master, not on the Friend being good or bad.

The Friend prizes friendship and equality, and in love seeks a partner who walks beside it as an equal. For a male chart, a strong Parallels group clashes with Direct Wealth (the wife star) — signalling romantic rivals or money-strain after marriage, so guard against triangles and friction. On the whole the Friend is loyal and sentimental, but must learn softness in intimacy and stop treating a partner as a rival.
